    Overview

Luz Noceda is a self-assured teenager with a wild imagination and nowhere to put it — until she stumbles through a portal into the Boiling Isles, a magical realm built on the bones of a fallen titan. There she befriends Eda the Owl Lady, a rebellious witch on the run from the law, and King, a tiny would-be demon king with a very loud roar. Determined to become a witch herself despite having no magical ability of her own, Luz enrolls at Hexside School of Magic and Demonics, where she discovers that magic in this world works very differently from the stories she grew up reading.

Created by Dana Terrace for Disney Channel, The Owl House starts as a warm, funny fish-out-of-water adventure and grows into something much bigger: a serialized fantasy about found family, rebellion against an oppressive regime and learning to accept yourself. Across three seasons, Luz’s friendships — with Amity, Willow and Gus — deepen into the show’s emotional core, while the mystery of Emperor Belos and the fate of the Boiling Isles builds to a finale that fans still talk about. It is one of the most beloved animated series of its era, and it earned that devotion.

    Creator and Main Cast

The Owl House was created by Dana Terrace. The voice cast is led by Sarah-Nicole Robles as Luz, Wendie Malick as Eda and Alex Hirsch as King and Hooty, with Issac Ryan Brown as Gus, Mae Whitman as Amity and Tati Gabrielle as Willow.

    Seasons Snapshot

    • Season 1 (2020) — 19 episodes.
    • Season 2 (2021) — 21 episodes.
    • Season 3 (2022) — 3 feature-length episodes, premiered October 15, 2022, concluding with “Watching and Dreaming” on April 8, 2023.

    Why Watch The Owl House

The Owl House is a show about weirdos finding their people, and it means every word of it. The Boiling Isles is a delight — gross, colorful and full of jokes — but the reason viewers stayed is the sincerity underneath: Luz’s determination to be herself in a world that wants her to fit a mold, Eda’s refusal to be tamed, and a cast of friends who love each other loudly. The final season’s three specials land like movies, paying off years of storytelling in a way few animated shows are allowed to. If you want a fantasy series with heart, humor and a genuinely satisfying ending, this is the one.

    Overview

Miguel Rivera is a twelve-year-old boy with a guitar in his hands and a song in his heart, but his family has forbidden music for generations. The ban began with a great-great-grandfather who left home to chase fame, and it has hardened into a rule nobody questions — until Miguel decides to enter a talent show on Día de Muertos and finds himself crossing into the Land of the Dead. There, among glowing marigold bridges, grand plazas and skeletons who still laugh, argue and sing, he meets the charming trickster Héctor, who offers to help him reach his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz. What begins as a quest for a blessing to return home becomes a deeper search for the truth about Miguel’s family, and for the relative whose memory has been quietly fading. Pixar fills this journey with colour, humour and songs that carry real emotional weight, turning a story about ancestors into a celebration of the bonds that keep them alive.

    Why Watch Coco?

Coco is that rare family film that works on every level at once: it is dazzling to look at, funny enough for children, and genuinely moving for adults. Its vision of the Land of the Dead is one of Pixar’s great creations — a city built from light, music and memory — and its songs, especially “Remember Me,” land with real force once the story’s secrets fall into place. Beneath the adventure is a thoughtful message about why families remember, forgive and keep telling each other’s stories. Few animated films earn their tears as honestly as this one does, and it rewards a rewatch: the clues to the ending are hiding in plain sight from the very first scenes.

    Overview

Every year, Halloween Town delivers the same scares, and its Pumpkin King is tired of them. The Nightmare Before Christmas follows Jack Skellington, the beloved skeleton who rules the town’s frights, as he stumbles through a doorway into Christmas Town and falls in love with a holiday built on snow, light and wonder. Determined to give Christmas a Halloween makeover, Jack kidnaps Santa Claus and puts his own ghoulish spin on the season, with gloriously chaotic results. Beneath the mischief, though, is a surprisingly tender story about a restless soul searching for meaning, and about Sally, the rag doll who sees Jack more clearly than he sees himself. Henry Selick’s stop-motion craft is astonishing, every frame packed with handmade detail, while Danny Elfman’s songs swing from spooky to soaring. It is a film that belongs to both October and December, and somehow makes both holidays better.

    Director & Cast

Director: Henry Selick. Story: Tim Burton. Screenplay: Caroline Thompson. Main cast: Danny Elfman as Jack Skellington (singing), Chris Sarandon as Jack Skellington (voice), Catherine O’Hara as Sally / Shock (voice), William Hickey as Dr. Finkelstein (voice), Glenn Shadix as Mayor (voice), Paul Reubens as Lock (voice), Ken Page as Oogie Boogie (voice).

Why Watch The Nightmare Before Christmas?

Watch The Nightmare Before Christmas because no other film captures two holidays at once. The stop-motion animation still feels magical decades later, Elfman’s score is endlessly singable, and Jack’s journey from boredom to belonging gives the spooky fun a genuine heart. It is short, sharp and endlessly rewatchable, perfect for a Halloween movie night, a Christmas Eve tradition, or any night in between.

    Overview

Matilde is a widow rebuilding her life after years in an abusive marriage, and the last thing she expects is a new friendship to change everything. Her neighbor Miguel is young, insecure, and drifting, yet the bond between these two people at very different stages of life becomes a source of courage for both of them. Set in Mexico City, Ernesto Contreras’s drama treats its characters with warmth and honesty, letting small moments carry real weight: a shared meal, a walk through the neighborhood, a conversation that goes further than either of them planned. Nora Velázquez gives Matilde a quiet strength that never asks for pity, while Benny Emmanuel makes Miguel’s uncertainty feel painfully real. The film’s Spanish title, Cosas imposibles, points to its gentle thesis: that the things that once felt impossible — starting over, trusting someone new, daring to want more from life — can still happen, at any age.

    Why Watch Impossible Things?

Impossible Things works because it refuses to sentimentalize its premise. The friendship at its center feels earned, built out of everyday kindness rather than grand gestures, and the film’s portrait of a woman reclaiming her life after abuse is handled with rare tenderness. Velázquez and Emmanuel are a lovely pairing, and Contreras directs with a light touch that keeps the story intimate rather than heavy. At under ninety minutes, it is a compact, humane drama — the kind of film that stays with you because it believes people can change, and that it is never too late to begin again.

The animation is bright and bouncy, the humor lands for all ages, and the whole film feels like a celebration of imagination. It is the perfect family movie night pick: silly, sweet, and wonderfully Seussian.

    Overview

Woody, Buzz, and the gang are back — and this time their biggest rival is not a toy at all. Bonnie has become obsessed with a sleek new tablet called Lilypad, a device that can do everything a toy can do and more, and the toys suddenly find themselves competing for a child’s attention in a world that never puts its screens down. Director Andrew Stanton returns the series to its roots: a warm, funny, and surprisingly moving story about what it means to be loved, needed, and eventually passed by. As the toys rally to remind Bonnie of the joy of play, Woody must face his own purpose once again, while Buzz and Jessie keep the gang together through mishaps, rescues, and one very modern adventure. With its mix of nostalgia and fresh ideas, Toy Story 5 asks whether old friends can still matter in a digital age — and answers with all the heart Pixar is known for.

    Director & Cast

Director: Andrew Stanton. Voice cast: Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, Joan Cusack as Jessie, Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants, Greta Lee as Lilypad.

    Why Watch Toy Story 5?

Watch Toy Story 5 because it tackles the question every parent and every grown-up kid is asking: can toys compete with tablets? The film is clever, touching, and full of the humor that made the series a classic, but it also has real things to say about attention, friendship, and growing up. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen slip back into Woody and Buzz like old friends, and the new characters — especially the scene-stealing Lilypad — bring fresh energy without stealing the show. It is a rare sequel that honors the past while speaking directly to the present, and it will leave both children and adults smiling through happy tears.

    Overview

Some islands do not appear on any map, and some memories do not stay where you left them. When Jo washes up on a lush, forgotten island steeped in Filipino mythology, she finds a place where the past is not quite past: spirits, creatures and old stories walk the beaches and forests as if they had never been abandoned. Jo herself is at a crossroads, carrying grief and questions she has avoided for years, and the island seems to know it, offering her both wonder and a way back to the parts of herself she has tried to forget. With new friends who are as funny as they are brave — and a few island guardians who are not so welcoming — she sets out to uncover why the island was forgotten, what it is protecting, and what she must remember before she can leave. Directors Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado balance comedy and emotion with a light touch, letting the film’s colour, music and mythology carry the heavier moments. It is a story about home, heritage and healing, told as a bright, heartfelt adventure where remembering is the bravest journey of all.

    Director & Cast

Directors: Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado. Main voice cast: H.E.R. as Jo, Liza Soberano as Raissa, Dave Franco as a mysterious islander, Jenny Slate as a guardian spirit, Manny Jacinto as a trickster, Lea Salonga as an elder.

    Why Watch Forgotten Island?

Watch Forgotten Island for a family adventure that feels genuinely new. Drawing on Filipino mythology gives the film a fresh palette of creatures, songs and stories, and the DreamWorks animation is warm, vibrant and full of small jokes that land for adults as well as children. Beneath the comedy, though, is a tender idea: that forgetting can be a kind of protection, and remembering can be a kind of courage. If you want an animated film with heart, humour and a culture you may not have seen on screen before, this island is well worth getting lost on.

    Overview

Disney’s live-action Moana brings the beloved animated adventure to life with real waves, real wind, and the same brave heart at its center. Moana, the strong-willed daughter of a chief, feels the ocean calling her beyond the reef, even though her people are told to stay close to home. When her island faces danger, she sets sail on a daring voyage to restore balance, guided by the ocean itself and by her own courage. Along the way she meets Maui, the larger-than-life demigod whose strength is matched only by his charm — and his flaws. Together they face storms, monsters, and the doubts that follow any great journey. Director Thomas Kail keeps the story’s warmth and wonder intact, turning a familiar tale into a sweeping, sunlit adventure about listening to your own voice, honoring where you come from, and daring to go further than anyone expects.

    Why Watch Moana?

Watch it if you want a family film that feels both epic and personal. Catherine Lagaʻaia brings Moana to life with confidence and heart, while Dwayne Johnson’s Maui is as funny and formidable as fans hoped, and the ocean itself becomes a character in its own right. The live-action setting gives the songs, the sailing, and the island world a new scale, without losing the humor and emotion that made the original a favorite. It is a film to watch together — bright, hopeful, and full of adventure — and a reminder that the best journeys begin when you trust the call you feel inside.

    Overview

Years after a flu pandemic empties the world, Hig lives alone in an old airport hangar with his dog, Jasper, and the guarded, heavily armed Bangley, a man whose survival rules are blunt and non-negotiable. Their days are a careful routine of fuel, food, patrols and silence, broken only by the hope of a radio signal that never quite arrives. When a message finally crackles through, it points toward a possible community far from their outpost, and Hig must decide whether to stay in the safety of what he knows or risk everything on the chance that other people — and a different kind of life — still exist. On the road, memory becomes as dangerous as any stranger: he carries the ghost of his wife, the guilt of choices made in the first chaotic days, and a stubborn tenderness that refuses to harden completely. Director Ridley Scott films this ruined America with patience and scale, letting empty highways, grounded aircraft and long stretches of quiet do the work that louder disaster films rush past, so the journey feels less like an escape and more like a test of what a person is still willing to protect.

    Director & Cast

Director: Ridley Scott. Main cast: Jacob Elordi as Hig, Josh Brolin as Bangley, Margaret Qualley as Cima, Guy Pearce as the stranger.

    Why Watch The Dog Stars?

Watch The Dog Stars for a post-apocalyptic film that trusts stillness. Scott and Elordi build their story around small, human details — a dog waiting by a runway, a shared meal, a radio tuned to nothing — and those details make the danger feel real when it comes. It is also a rare survival story where kindness is not treated as naivety: Hig’s refusal to become as hard as the world around him is the film’s central argument. If you liked the mood of quiet, character-led science fiction, this is a thoughtful, beautifully shot entry that stays with you after the credits.
