Overview

Clayface begins with a rise that feels almost too bright to last. Matt Hagen climbs from a tough start on Gotham’s streets to the attention and applause of Hollywood, only for violence and betrayal to leave him disfigured and cast aside by the people who once celebrated him. Desperate to recover the face — and the career — he has lost, he turns to an experimental treatment that promises restoration. At first it seems miraculous, giving him back his appearance and his confidence. Then the cost becomes clear. As his body learns to change shape, his sense of self begins to slip, and the line between performance and reality grows dangerously thin. Director James Watkins frames that collapse as body horror with a human centre: a man who spent his life becoming other people for a living now cannot stop becoming someone else. Revenge pulls him forward, but every new face raises the same question — if you can be anyone, who are you when the performance ends?

Director & Cast

Director: James Watkins. Main cast: Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen / Clayface, Naomi Ackie as Caitlyn Corr, Eddie Marsan as Frank Fitzpatrick, Max Minghella as John Borrelli, with David Dencik as Markos Szabo.

Why Watch Clayface?

Watch Clayface because it treats a comic-book villain as a tragedy first and a monster second. The horror works best not in the transformations themselves, but in the quiet moments when Hagen realises he is losing the thread of his own story. Harries carries that duality with a mix of charm and unease, and the Gotham-to-Hollywood journey gives the film a sharp satirical edge about fame, image and disposable talent. If you like DC stories that step away from capes and into dread, this is the one that lingers: a portrait of a performer whose greatest role may be the one that erases him.
