The Penguin

2024 • TMDB 8.4 • 1 season • 8 episodes • Drama, Crime • HBO

Overview

After the events of The Batman, Gotham City is flooded, broken and leaderless. Carmine Falcone is dead, the seawall has collapsed, and a power vacuum has opened at the top of the city’s criminal underworld. Into it steps Oswald “Oz” Cobb — the Penguin — a mid-level gangster with big ambitions, a limp, and a talent for surviving people far more dangerous than himself. Created by Lauren LeFranc, The Penguin is a crime saga about Oz’s ruthless climb, his war with the Falcone and Maroni families, and his uneasy alliance with Victor Aguilar, a young drifter he takes under his wing. Colin Farrell, unrecognizable under prosthetics, gives a towering performance as a villain who is by turns funny, pathetic and terrifying. Across eight episodes, Oz schemes, betrays and murders his way toward the top of Gotham’s underworld — while Cristin Milioti’s Sofia Falcone, fresh out of Arkham, proves to be the one rival he cannot outthink. Dark, gripping and superbly acted, The Penguin is the rare comic-book spin-off that stands entirely on its own.
