Overview
Seinfeld famously billed itself as a show about nothing — and then spent nine seasons proving that nothing could be hilarious. Jerry Seinfeld plays a lightly fictionalized version of himself, a New York stand-up whose everyday life becomes an endless source of petty crises, thanks to his three offbeat friends: George Costanza, the neurotic schemer forever one bad idea from disaster; Elaine Benes, sharp-tongued and gloriously unbothered; and Cosmo Kramer, the neighbor who bursts through doors and into schemes with total confidence. From the Soup Nazi to Festivus, the show turned the smallest social rules — double-dipping, close talkers, waiting for a table — into cultural shorthand. Beneath the jokes sits a ruthlessly observed comedy of manners, where four self-absorbed friends learn absolutely nothing. That’s exactly why it still works: Seinfeld is timeless because human selfishness never goes out of style.
