Overview
Psycho begins with Marion Crane, a secretary who steals $40,000 from her employer and flees, hoping to start a new life with her boyfriend Sam. Caught in a rainstorm, she stops for the night at the isolated Bates Motel, run by the shy, nervous Norman Bates, who lives in the looming house behind it with his domineering mother. What follows is one of the most famous sequences in film history — and a story that keeps twisting long after it. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock and led by Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Vera Miles, John Gavin, and Martin Balsam, Psycho broke the rules of its time: it killed its heroine early, made its villain sympathetic, and used Bernard Herrmann’s screeching score to turn a shower into a nightmare. Shot in black and white on a modest budget, it remains a masterclass in suspense, editing, and pure cinematic misdirection.
