Overview
Raiders of the Lost Ark introduces Dr. Indiana Jones, a tweed-suited archaeology professor who moonlights as a globe-trotting adventurer. Hired by the US government in 1936, Indy must race the Nazis to the legendary Ark of the Covenant, a relic said to hold unimaginable power. His journey takes him from a booby-trapped Peruvian temple to the bars of Nepal and the sun-baked digs of Cairo, reuniting him with the fiery Marion Ravenwood and pitting him against the rival archaeologist Belloq. Directed by Steven Spielberg and led by Harrison Ford, Karen Allen, Paul Freeman, and John Rhys-Davies, the film is a breathless serial adventure packed with the boulder chase, the truck chase, and the snake pit. It revived old-fashioned movie excitement for a new generation and created one of cinema’s most enduring heroes.
Why Watch Raiders of the Lost Ark?
Watch it because it is the adventure film by which all others are judged. Spielberg stages set piece after set piece with wit and invention, and Ford’s Indy — brave, battered, and funny — is endlessly watchable. It is pure escapism, crafted at the highest level, and it never slows down.
