Overview

The Usual Suspects opens after a massacre aboard a ship in San Pedro harbor, with only two survivors: a badly burned Hungarian gangster and Verbal Kint, a small-time con man with cerebral palsy. Brought in for questioning, Verbal tells customs agent Dave Kujan a sprawling story about five criminals — himself, Keaton, McManus, Fenster, and Hockney — who were thrown together in a police lineup and then drawn into a series of jobs that all seem to lead back to one name: Keyser Söze, a legendary crime lord so feared that his very existence is doubted. Directed by Bryan Singer and led by Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, Chazz Palminteri, Benicio del Toro, and Stephen Baldwin, the film is a puzzle told in flashback, where every detail may be a clue or a lie. Its final minutes reframe everything you have just watched, delivering one of the most celebrated twist endings in cinema.

Why Watch The Usual Suspects?

Watch it for the twist — and for the storytelling that earns it. Spacey’s Verbal is one of the great unreliable narrators, and the film rewards close attention: on a second viewing, the clues were there all along. It is a tight, quotable crime thriller that made the lineup scene and the name Keyser Söze part of film legend.
