Overview
Léon is a professional hitman in New York, a quiet loner who drinks milk, tends a plant, and follows the rules of his trade with monk-like discipline. His world changes when 12-year-old Mathilda, his neighbor, returns home to find her family murdered by corrupt DEA agents led by the unhinged Norman Stansfield. Léon takes her in, and an unlikely bond forms: she asks him to teach her his skills so she can avenge her little brother, while he, for the first time, has someone to care for. Directed by Luc Besson and starring Jean Reno, a young Natalie Portman in her debut, and a terrifying Gary Oldman, Léon: The Professional mixes balletic action with a tender, morally complicated story. Its New York atmosphere, Eric Serra’s score, and the climactic siege of Léon’s apartment building have made it one of the most beloved crime dramas of the 1990s.
Why Watch Léon: The Professional?
Watch it for the relationship at its heart and for Oldman’s unforgettable villain. Reno gives Léon a gentle, childlike soul beneath the killer’s exterior, Portman is astonishingly assured, and Besson stages action with style and feeling. It is a hitman film that is really about loneliness, family, and redemption.
