Overview

Derek Vineyard was once the charismatic leader of a violent white supremacist gang in Venice, California, whose hatred shaped the life of his younger brother Danny. After three years in prison for murder, Derek returns home changed, determined to break free of the movement and to stop Danny from following the same path. Tony Kaye’s film moves between stark black-and-white flashbacks of Derek’s radicalization and color scenes of his difficult present, as Danny’s teacher assigns him an essay on his brother that forces both young men to confront what they have become. Edward Norton gives a towering, Oscar-nominated performance as Derek, with Edward Furlong as Danny, Beverly D’Angelo as their mother, and Avery Brooks as the teacher who refuses to give up on them. American History X is a hard, confronting drama about hate, responsibility, and the painful possibility of change.

Why Watch American History X?

Watch it because it refuses easy answers. Norton makes Derek’s transformation believable and terrifying in equal measure, and the film shows how hate is learned — and how it might be unlearned. It is powerful, unsettling, and still urgently relevant.
