Overview
David Fincher’s Fight Club follows an unnamed office worker, credited only as the Narrator, whose life has become a loop of furniture catalogues, business trips and sleepless nights. Desperate for something real, he starts crashing support groups, where he meets the chain-smoking Marla Singer, another tourist in other people’s pain. On a flight home he meets Tyler Durden, a charismatic soap salesman who seems to live entirely free of the rules the Narrator obeys. After his apartment is destroyed, the Narrator moves into Tyler’s decaying house, and the two men channel their frustration into bare-knuckle fights in a bar basement. What begins as a private release valve grows into Fight Club, a secret society with strict rules and a rapidly swelling membership, and then into Project Mayhem, a far more dangerous organization with ambitions that reach well beyond the basement. As the Narrator tries to pull back, he discovers how little control he has left over what he helped create.
Why Watch Fight Club?
More than twenty-five years on, Fight Club still hits a nerve because it names a feeling many people recognize: the emptiness of a life built around buying things and pleasing employers. Fincher directs with icy precision, turning a story about two men punching each other in a basement into a darkly comic diagnosis of modern masculinity and consumer culture. Edward Norton and Brad Pitt are perfectly matched, Norton’s anxious everyman against Pitt’s magnetic anarchist, with Helena Bonham Carter’s Marla cutting through both of them. The film’s twist, its quotable rules and its unforgettable ending have made it one of the most argued-over films of its era, and it rewards a second viewing more than almost any other.
