Overview
Captive is a tense drama from acclaimed Filipino director Brillante Ma Mendoza, dramatizing the 2001 Abu Sayyaf kidnappings in the Philippines. When a group of foreign tourists and missionaries is seized by armed militants in the jungle, the hostages — including French social worker Thérèse Bourgoine, played by Isabelle Huppert — must endure months of captivity, forced marches, and uncertainty as negotiations stall and rescue attempts fail. Mendoza shoots the ordeal with documentary-like immediacy, placing the camera inside the hostage camp and refusing to soften the fear, exhaustion, and moral ambiguity of the situation. The film follows the hostages’ shifting relationships with each other and their captors, and the impossible choices faced by people caught between politics and survival. Grounded in real events and led by a committed international cast, Captive is an unflinching look at a hostage crisis that gripped the world.
Why Watch Captive?
Captive is worth watching for viewers who value true-story dramas and the raw, realistic style of Brillante Ma Mendoza. Isabelle Huppert delivers a restrained, compelling performance at the center of an international cast, and the film’s refusal to turn a real tragedy into easy entertainment gives it a weight few hostage thrillers achieve. If you want a serious, grounded drama about endurance, faith, and survival under extreme pressure, Captive is a powerful choice.
