Overview
Martin Scorsese’s The Departed is a masterclass in tension, a crime thriller that keeps two moles circling each other until the noose tightens beyond breaking point. In South Boston, police plant rookie Billy Costigan inside Frank Costello’s Irish mob, while Costello’s own protégé, Colin Sullivan, climbs the ranks of the Massachusetts State Police, feeding the gang every move the law makes. Neither man knows the other’s identity, and Scorsese turns their parallel lives into a nerve-shredding game of cat and mouse, punctuated by profane humor, sudden violence, and one of the most ruthless final acts in modern cinema. Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon anchor the film with career-best intensity, Jack Nicholson revels in menace as Costello, and Mark Wahlberg steals scenes as the acid-tongued Sergeant Dignam. Winner of four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, The Departed is Scorsese at his most propulsive: a story about loyalty, identity, and the price of living a lie.
