Overview
Pop idol Mima Kirigoe has decided to leave the stage behind. Quitting her chart-topping group to become a serious actress, she takes a small part in a television crime drama and hopes the world will let her grow up. Instead, the world tightens its grip. An obsessive fan shadows her every move, a mysterious website called Mima’s Room logs her days in unsettling detail, and the people around her begin turning up dead. As the pressure mounts, Mima’s sense of self starts to fracture: the cheerful idol she used to be appears before her, smiling, judging, and insisting that the real Mima never left. Satoshi Kon’s debut feature turns fame into a hall of mirrors, blurring performance and reality until neither Mima nor the audience can tell which version of her life is true. Tense, stylish, and genuinely disturbing, it is a psychological thriller that treats celebrity as a kind of haunting, and it remains one of the most influential anime films ever made.

Why Watch Perfect Blue?
Perfect Blue is worth watching because it understood the dark side of fame decades before social media made it everyday news. Satoshi Kon directs with a magician’s control, cutting between Mima’s real life, her roles, and her delusions so smoothly that the film itself feels like it is losing its mind. It is short, sharp, and endlessly rewatchable: every viewing reveals another planted clue about whose version of events you can trust. If you love psychological thrillers, or you want to see the film that inspired a generation of directors, this is essential viewing.
