Made in Abyss

2017 • TMDB 8.3 • 2 seasons • Animation, Drama, Action & Adventure, Sci-Fi & Fantasy

Overview

On a remote island, the Abyss is the last great unexplored place: a bottomless chasm of ancient relics, strange creatures, and a curse that punishes anyone who climbs back toward the light. At its rim sits the orphanage town of Orth, where young Riko dreams of following in the footsteps of her legendary mother, the White Whistle Lyza. When Riko discovers Reg, a mysterious boy with a robotic body and no memory of his past, she sees her chance. Together they slip away from Orth and begin the descent, chasing Lyza’s trail deeper into a world that grows stranger, darker, and more beautiful with every layer. Made in Abyss pairs luminous, storybook visuals with genuine dread, as each step down raises the stakes and makes the way back harder. It is an adventure about curiosity, friendship, and the price of wonder, told with a sincerity that makes its most harrowing moments land all the harder.

The Abyss itself is a masterpiece of world-building, with each layer feeling like a new country with its own creatures, rules, and dangers. Riko and Reg’s friendship gives the journey its heart, while the show’s willingness to let its bright, gentle art style sit beside real peril makes every descent feel genuinely brave.
