Overview
Guillermo del Toro has dreamed of filming Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein for decades, and his version is a lavish, gothic retelling of the story of a man who dares to play God. Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist, becomes obsessed with conquering death itself, and his experiments lead him to bring a creature to life — a being of extraordinary sensitivity and terrifying strength, abandoned by its creator almost as soon as it draws breath. What follows is a sweeping tale of fathers and sons, of ambition and guilt, told with del Toro’s trademark visual splendour: candlelit laboratories, storm-lashed landscapes and a creature whose tragedy is written across every frame. Oscar Isaac brings feverish intensity to Victor, Jacob Elordi is heartbreaking as the Creature, and Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz and Charles Dance complete a superb cast. This is horror as high art — beautiful, sorrowful and impossible to forget.
Why Watch Frankenstein?
Because del Toro was born to make this film. No living director understands monsters — and the lonely, misunderstood souls inside them — quite like he does, and his Frankenstein is the fullest expression of that gift. It is a feast for the eyes, a tragedy for the heart, and a reminder that the greatest horror stories are really about love and abandonment. Even if you know the story by heart, you have never seen it like this.
