Overview
Teddy is convinced that the world is run by aliens in human skin, and he has decided to do something about it. Together with his cousin Don, he kidnaps Michelle, the powerful CEO of a major pharmaceutical company, and holds her prisoner in a basement while he demands proof of her true nature. Michelle insists she is exactly what she appears to be: a ruthless, ambitious executive, not an extraterrestrial. But as the days wear on, the line between captor and captive starts to blur. Yorgos Lanthimos directs a darkly comic thriller that turns a conspiracy theory into a battle of wills, where every calm, reasonable answer only feeds Teddy’s suspicion further. Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are mesmerizing as two people locked in a room together, each certain the other is hiding something, in a film that keeps you guessing about who, if anyone, is telling the truth.
Why Watch Bugonia?
Because no one makes unsettling comedy quite like Yorgos Lanthimos. Bugonia takes an absurd premise — a CEO kidnapped by men who believe she is an alien — and plays it with deadpan seriousness, letting the tension build until it is almost unbearable. Emma Stone is brilliant as Michelle, cool and calculating even in captivity, while Jesse Plemons makes Teddy’s paranoia feel frighteningly logical. It is a film about conspiracy culture, corporate power, and the stories we tell ourselves, and its ending will have you arguing about what really happened long after the credits roll.
