Overview
Joan, Maya, Lynn, and Toni are not just friends; they are a chosen family whose bond is tested by almost every adult problem imaginable, from careers that stall to marriages that fall apart and romances that arrive at exactly the wrong moment. Set in Los Angeles, the series follows four women whose personalities clash as often as they complement one another: Joan searches for control and love in equal measure, Maya speaks her mind before anyone else can, Lynn drifts between ambitions, and Toni pursues status with a confidence that hides her own doubts. The comedy comes from their honesty, not from easy jokes, and the drama lands because the friendships feel earned over years of shared meals, arguments, and forgiveness. Across eight seasons, the show treats Black women’s professional lives, friendships, and interior lives as worthy of the same attention other sitcoms gave to romance alone, and that focus is why it still feels modern. It is warm, sharp, and deeply relatable about growing up long after youth has ended.
