Overview
Warfare drops the viewer into a single, harrowing day with a platoon of US Navy SEALs in Iraq, and it never really lets go. Told in near real time, the film follows the unit as a routine surveillance mission in a residential neighborhood goes badly wrong, leaving the men pinned down, wounded, and waiting for an evacuation that cannot come fast enough. There is no soaring score to tell you how to feel and no tidy hero’s arc to hide behind — just radio chatter, dust, gunfire, and the desperate teamwork of soldiers trying to keep each other alive. Co-directed by Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza, a veteran whose own experiences inform the story, Warfare is less a traditional war movie than an act of witness: intense, claustrophobic, and brutally honest about what combat costs the people inside it.
Why Watch Warfare?
Warfare is worth watching because of how completely it commits to its approach. The real-time structure makes every minute feel earned, the sound design puts you inside the house with the platoon, and the young ensemble — led by D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Poulter, and Cosmo Jarvis — plays exhaustion, fear, and loyalty without a trace of showboating. It is not an easy watch, and it is not meant to be, but it is one of the most disciplined and affecting war films in years, and a reminder that the most powerful stories about war are often the ones that refuse to look away or dress things up.
