Overview
On paper, Ivy and Theo Rose have it all: successful careers, a loving marriage, and two great kids. Ivy is a chef whose restaurant is finally taking off, while Theo is an architect whose grand projects are quietly drying up. As her star rises and his falls, the balance of their marriage shifts — and the cracks that were easy to ignore start to widen. What begins as sharp banter and bruised pride escalates into open competition, with each trying to outdo, outsmart, and outlast the other. Jay Roach directs Tony McNamara’s screenplay, adapted from Warren Adler’s novel and reimagining the story made famous by The War of the Roses, as a very modern divorce comedy: two people who still love each other, fighting over a life they built together. The Roses is funny, uncomfortable, and often painfully recognizable — a portrait of a marriage that falls apart not with one dramatic betrayal, but with a thousand small cuts.
Why Watch The Roses?
Because Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch are a dream pairing for this kind of comedy: warm enough to make you root for the marriage, and sharp enough to make every barb land. Around them, a scene-stealing supporting cast — Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon, Ncuti Gatwa — turns every dinner party into a battleground. And beneath the laughs, the film asks a genuinely interesting question: what happens when two ambitious people stop pulling in the same direction?
