Overview
Lucy is one of New York City’s most successful matchmakers, a young woman who can size up a client’s prospects — income, height, age, ambition — in a single glance. She believes love can be calculated, until her own heart refuses to follow the formula. Caught between Harry, a wealthy, charming financier who seems like the perfect match on paper, and John, her broke, struggling actor ex-boyfriend who knows her better than anyone, Lucy has to decide what she actually wants from love. Celine Song, the director of Past Lives, brings the same sharp, searching intelligence to this modern romantic drama, asking whether a relationship should be a good deal or a leap of faith. Dakota Johnson is luminous as Lucy, with Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal giving the triangle real weight and warmth. Set against a glittering, competitive Manhattan, Materialists is a grown-up romance about money, class, and the impossible math of the heart.
Why Watch Materialists?
Because it is the rare romantic drama that treats its audience like adults. Celine Song writes dialogue that crackles with wit and honesty, and the central question — can love be reduced to a checklist? — feels genuinely fresh. The three leads are superb, the New York setting is gorgeous, and the film never settles for easy answers. If you loved Past Lives, this is essential viewing; if you are tired of formulaic rom-coms, this is the antidote: a love story with a brain, a sense of humor, and a beating heart.
