Overview
The Philippines’ long-running horror anthology goes back to the beginning in Shake, Rattle & Roll: Evil Origins, a three-part film that traces one evil across three very different eras. In 1775, during the Spanish colonial period, nuns barricaded inside a cloister must survive a single terrifying night after an unknown evil is set free among them. In 2025, a group of friends attends a Halloween masquerade ball that is attacked by a serial killer, turning a night of costumes and celebration into a fight for survival. And in 2050, the story jumps to a post-apocalyptic Philippines ruled by the aswang, the shape-shifting creatures of Filipino folklore. Three directors — Joey De Guzman, Shugo Praico, and Ian Loreños — each take on one of the segments, giving the film three distinct moods while keeping the anthology’s signature mix of scares and local flavor. With a large ensemble cast led by Carla Abellana and Richard Gutierrez, Evil Origins works both as a standalone horror anthology and as a new chapter in one of Philippine cinema’s most enduring franchises.
Why Watch Shake, Rattle & Roll: Evil Origins?
Three horror stories for the price of one, spanning nearly three centuries — from a colonial-era cloister to a modern-day masquerade and a future ruled by folklore monsters. Fans of anthology horror get variety in a single sitting, and viewers curious about Filipino folklore will find the aswang mythology at the heart of the final segment. The stacked cast, mixing veteran stars with younger names, makes each segment feel like its own event.
