Overview
Released in 1997 as the cinematic conclusion to Hideaki Anno’s landmark television series, The End of Evangelion plunges straight into the aftermath of SEELE’s assault on NERV headquarters. As the shadowy committee launches a full-scale attack to seize control of the Evangelion project, Shinji Ikari retreats into despair, unable to face the horrors unfolding around him. When Gendo Ikari’s own designs for the Human Instrumentality Project collide with SEELE’s, the fate of every human soul hangs in the balance, and Shinji is forced to decide whether humanity should dissolve into a single shared consciousness or remain as separate, flawed individuals. Fiercely intense and deliberately unsettling, the film fuses apocalyptic mecha action with raw psychological introspection, confronting loneliness, identity, and the fear of connection head-on. Its unforgettable imagery, Shiro Sagisu’s haunting score, and uncompromising final act have made it one of the most debated and influential anime films ever made.

It delivers the definitive ending the television finale could not, with jaw-dropping action sequences — the mass-production Eva battle and the Third Impact — balanced by an intimate portrait of a broken teenager choosing how to live. Anno’s direction is bold and unflinching, refusing easy answers and trusting the audience to wrestle with its meaning.
