Overview

Johanne is a marine biologist working at a fish farm in a remote Norwegian fjord when the water starts giving up its secrets. Fish turn up dead, equipment is damaged in ways no storm can explain, and then two teenagers are found killed in brutal circumstances that point to something hunting in the deep. The evidence leads Johanne to the oldest story the fjord has: the kraken, the vast sea creature of Norse legend said to sleep beneath these waters. As she investigates, it becomes clear that the farm’s own operations may have disturbed whatever lives below, and that the creature’s appetite is only growing. With the local community split between disbelief and fear, Johanne must convince people the danger is real before the next attack, and decide how far she is willing to go into the water herself to stop it.

Why Watch Kraken?

Kraken works because it takes its setting seriously. Norway’s fjords are filmed as places of real beauty and real isolation, which makes the horror land harder: the water looks inviting right up until it doesn’t. The folklore angle gives the film more texture than a generic monster movie, and the question of what humans did to wake the creature adds a cautionary edge beneath the scares. At a tight 94 minutes, it moves briskly from mystery to full-blown creature feature without padding, and Sara Khorami anchors the escalating panic with a grounded, believable performance. If you enjoy creature features and want something different from the usual Hollywood shark movie, this one is worth a look.
