Overview

In an alternate Edo-period Japan, aliens known as the Amanto have invaded, overthrown the shogunate and banned the carrying of swords, leaving the samurai class in decline. Gintoki Sakata, a former white-demon warrior of the Joi War, now runs the Yorozuya, an odd-jobs shop that takes on any request for a price. Alongside the straight-laced Shinpachi Shimura and the super-strong alien girl Kagura, Gintoki drifts through Kabukicho, taking on jobs that range from babysitting and pet-sitting to mediating gang disputes and rescuing old friends. The series is famous for its wild comedy, constant fourth-wall jokes and parodies of other anime, manga and Japanese pop culture. Yet beneath the jokes lies a surprisingly serious story: Gintoki’s wartime past, his rivalry with former comrades like Kotaro Katsura and Shinsuke Takasugi, and arcs such as the Shinsengumi Crisis, the Shogun Assassination and the final Silver Soul war give the show real emotional weight. Few long-running anime balance laughter and tragedy as confidently as Gintama does.
