Demon Slayer’s Hashira, Ranked: The Nine Pillars and Their Breathing Styles

demon slayer hashira ranked is one of the fandom’s favorite debates, because the nine Pillars of the Demon Slayer Corps are all elite — but they are not equal. Demon Slayer follows Tanjiro Kamado as he fights demons alongside these nine masters of Breathing Styles. Here is our ranking, from ninth to first, judged on feats, Upper Moon fights and sheer presence.

9. Shinobu Kocho (Insect Breathing)

Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Pillar, is the weakest in raw strength — she cannot behead a demon — but she is one of the smartest. Her Insect Breathing uses a thin, needle-like blade coated in wisteria poison, and her plan against Doma, Upper Moon Two, was a masterpiece of preparation: she saturated her own body with poison over a year so that when Doma absorbed her, he was doomed. Shinobu ranks last on power, first on cunning.

8. Mitsuri Kanroji (Love Breathing) and 7. Tengen Uzui (Sound Breathing)

Mitsuri Kanroji, the Love Pillar, is deceptively strong — her whip-like blade and flexible body let her hold off Hantengu, Upper Moon Four, far longer than anyone expected. Tengen Uzui, the Sound Pillar, is a former shinobi whose flashy, explosive fighting style helped Tanjiro defeat Gyutaro, Upper Moon Six, at the cost of his hand and his career. Both are beloved; neither quite reaches the top tier.

6. Obanai Iguro (Serpent Breathing) and 5. Giyu Tomioka (Water Breathing)

Obanai Iguro, the Serpent Pillar, wields a twisting blade that mirrors a snake’s strike, and he fought Muzan himself in the final battle. Giyu Tomioka, the Water Pillar, is the series’ quiet anchor: the first Hashira Tanjiro meets, the one who spared Nezuko, and the fighter who stood beside Tanjiro against Akaza, Upper Moon Three. Giyu’s calm, total mastery of Water Breathing puts him just above Obanai.

4. Kyojuro Rengoku (Flame Breathing) and 3. Muichiro Tokito (Mist Breathing)

Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Pillar, is the heart of the series: his fight against Akaza aboard the Mugen Train is the most beloved battle in Demon Slayer, and he died protecting every passenger. Muichiro Tokito, the Mist Pillar, is the youngest Hashira and a prodigy — he defeated Gyokko, Upper Moon Five, alone, and his Mist Breathing makes him nearly untouchable. Rengoku ranks on heart; Muichiro ranks on raw, terrifying talent.

2. Sanemi Shinazugawa (Wind Breathing) and 1. Gyomei Himejima (Stone Breathing)

Sanemi Shinazugawa, the Wind Pillar, is the Corps’ wildest fighter: his rare blood intoxicates demons, and he fought Kokushibo, Upper Moon One, to a standstill. But the top spot belongs to Gyomei Himejima, the Stone Pillar — blind, gentle, and universally acknowledged as the strongest Hashira, whose spiked flail and axe held Kokushibo longer than anyone else. When the other Pillars name the strongest among them, they name Gyomei.

How Breathing Styles Work

Every Breathing Style descends from the original Sun Breathing, adapted into forms — numbered techniques, or kata — that match the user’s body and temperament. The strongest Hashira also awaken the Demon Slayer Mark, a flame-like marking that boosts speed and strength at a terrible cost, and a few reach the Transparent World, a state where they can see an opponent’s muscles and blood flow. That is why the ranking above is not just about style: it is about who pushed their body furthest.

Why This Ranking Works

So what does this Demon Slayer Hashira ranking come down to? A simple truth: the Pillars are not ranked by popularity, but by what they actually did against the Upper Moons — and Gyomei, Sanemi and Muichiro stand apart. For another ranked power system, our Bleach captains guide explains the Gotei 13.
