    Overview

Jiro Horikoshi is a boy who dreams of building beautiful airplanes, though his poor eyesight means he will never fly them himself. From the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 through the lean years of the Depression, Hayao Miyazaki follows Jiro from a curious student sketching aircraft in his notebooks to the gifted engineer behind Japan’s famed Mitsubishi A6M Zero. Along the way he meets the Italian designer Caproni in dreamlike conversations, falls for the gentle Nahoko, and wrestles with a question that haunts the whole film: can something made with love and beauty stay innocent when it is turned into a weapon? The Wind Rises is unlike any other Ghibli film — quieter, sadder, and more grown-up — yet it is full of the studio’s trademark wonders: wind rippling through grass, paper planes drifting across the sky, and a love story that lingers long after the credits. It is a bittersweet portrait of a dreamer caught between art and history.

    • Hideaki Anno as Jiro Horikoshi (voice)
    • Hidetoshi Nishijima as Honjô (voice)

    • Mirai Shida as Kayo Horikoshi (voice)

    Why Watch The Wind Rises?

Because it shows Miyazaki working in a completely different register — no magic, no monsters, just a real man’s life rendered with extraordinary tenderness. The flying sequences are gorgeous, the romance is quietly devastating, and the film’s refusal to judge its hero makes it one of the most thought-provoking animated dramas ever made.

    Overview

Iris is a young woman who agrees to marry Joaquin, a wealthy widower, in a bargain driven by money rather than affection. Released in the Philippines in 2024 under its original title Donselya, Virgin is a Tagalog-language drama that follows what happens when a marriage built on a secret begins to fall apart. Joaquin believes he knows the woman he has married, but when he discovers that Iris has not been truthful about her past, trust collapses and the couple’s honeymoon turns into a confrontation with violent consequences. Director Christopher Novabos keeps the focus on the bargain at the heart of the marriage: what each partner wanted from the arrangement, what each was willing to hide to get it, and how quickly a household built on deception can unravel. The result is a tense domestic drama about money, honesty, and the price of a secret kept too long.

    Why Watch Virgin?

Watch Virgin for a Philippine drama that turns a marriage-of-convenience premise into a tense study of trust and deception. Dyessa Garcia leads a cast that plays the fallout in close quarters, and the film’s compact runtime keeps the pressure on as a single revelation changes everything between Iris and Joaquin. It is a premise-driven drama for viewers who like stories where one secret drives the whole plot.

Jennifer and Rica have been friends since high school, and they face the world side by side. When money runs short and options run out, the two young women enter into arrangements with wealthy benefactors, trading companionship for financial security. What begins as a practical way to survive soon tests the bond between them, as jealousy, ambition, and new relationships pull them in different directions. As each woman falls for someone she did not expect, the friendship that once felt unbreakable is forced to reckon with the cost of the lives they have chosen. Directed by Christian Paolo Lat, Sugar Baby is a romance about loyalty under pressure, following two friends who will sacrifice almost everything for each other — until love itself gets in the way.

    Why Watch Sugar Baby?

Watch Sugar Baby for Azi Acosta and Robb Guinto, whose performances carry a story about friendship tested by money, desire, and choice. Overview

Grief has left Gemma adrift in her small town when a mysterious traveling carnival rolls in, all bright lights, music, and whispered promises of escape. Drawn into its strange, seductive world, she finds a dangerous new romance and a community that seems to understand her loss better than anyone back home. But the carnival’s charm is only half the story: behind the painted faces and late-night rides, something older and hungrier is at work, and every kindness comes with a price. As the line between attraction and deception blurs, Gemma must decide whether the carnival is offering her a way back to life or a beautifully decorated trap. Vampire Carnival mixes horror and romance, letting its fairground setting do much of the storytelling, with the thrill of the rides and the warmth of new love always shadowed by the feeling that the night is watching back.

    Why Watch Vampire Carnival?

Because it treats a vampire story as a story about grief first and horror second. The carnival is a perfect horror setting — a place built to make you surrender your senses — and the film uses it to ask how much of ourselves we would trade for one more night of feeling alive. Jason Isaacs brings a commanding, unsettling presence to the proceedings, while Nell Verlaque anchors the film as a young woman whose mourning makes her both vulnerable and brave. If you like your horror romantic, atmospheric, and a little dangerous, this is a stylish, old-fashioned chiller with a modern ache at its center.

    Overview

Mitsuha is a high school girl in the quiet mountain town of Itomori, where she helps at her family’s shrine and dreams of life in the big city. Taki is a high school boy in Tokyo, juggling school and a part-time job. One morning, each wakes up in the other’s body — and the swap keeps happening. At first they bicker through notes and rules left on phones and skin, fixing each other’s days and friendships. Gradually, without ever meeting, they fall for one another. Then the swapping stops. When Taki sets out to find Mitsuha, he uncovers a devastating truth about time: a comet, a festival, and a town that may no longer exist in his present. Overview

Denji has learned to survive in a world where devils, hunters and secret enemies all want something from him, but he has never learned how to be loved. That changes when Reze walks into his life: warm, funny and dangerously mysterious, she offers him the ordinary happiness he has always chased — a quiet evening, a shared meal, a hand to hold. Tatsuya Yoshihara’s film turns that fragile romance into the heart of a brutal, blood-soaked spectacle, where every tender moment sharpens the danger waiting underneath. MAPPA’s animation is explosive and expressive, swinging from intimate close-ups to ferocious chainsaw combat without losing Denji’s loneliness or hope. Reze Arc is both a thrilling continuation of Chainsaw Man and a tragic love story about wanting a normal life in a world that will not allow one.

    Director & Cast

    • Director: Tatsuya Yoshihara
    • Kikunosuke Toya as Denji (voice)

Why Watch Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc?

This is anime action with an emotional core that hits harder than its fight scenes. Newcomers can enjoy the stylish, chaotic spectacle, while fans get a faithful, beautifully animated adaptation of one of the manga’s most beloved arcs. It is violent, funny, heartbreaking and visually stunning — and its ending reframes everything you thought you knew about Denji’s wish for a simple, happy life.

    Overview

Lhan grew up caged and protected by a family of hired killers because her rare blood is worth killing for. When an old enemy resurfaces and the fragile safety around her breaks, she refuses to stay a prisoner of other people’s plans. Beside Pran, the assassin she loves, she chooses to fight for a future neither of them was promised. Taweewat Wantha’s Thai action-romance moves between tender, guarded intimacy and brutal, close-quarters violence, showing how love can be both a weakness an enemy exploits and the reason to keep standing. Pimchanok Luevisadpaibul plays Lhan with a mix of fear and fierce resolve, while Thanapob Leeratanakachorn gives Pran a quiet, dangerous loyalty. My Dearest Assassin is not a gentle romance: it is a story about blood, loyalty and sacrifice, where every escape costs something and every choice to protect someone else raises the stakes.

    • Pimchanok Luevisadpaibul as Lhan

    Why Watch My Dearest Assassin?

If you like romance with real danger attached, this Thai hit delivers both. The action is personal rather than anonymous, the central relationship is tested by violence rather than misunderstandings, and the film keeps asking what its heroine is willing to lose to stay free. It is a strong pick for viewers who want a Netflix action film that is emotional as well as tense, and a good introduction to contemporary Thai genre cinema.
