Overview
Niki White is a piano tuner with a gift he never asked for. Living with hyperacusis, an extreme sensitivity to sound, he wears headphones to get through the day — but that same hypersensitive hearing lets him hear the inner workings of a safe the way other musicians hear a melody. When his mother’s medical bills pile up, the young tuner is drawn into a second life: by day he tunes pianos in elegant New York homes, and by night he opens safes for a crew that operates in a far more dangerous key. Veteran safecracker Harry Horowitz takes Niki under his wing, seeing in the quiet young man a talent he has never encountered before, while Ruthie Waymon offers a connection to a life beyond crime. But the crew around them — including the menacing Uri and the calculating Marius Maissner — has its own plans, and Niki’s rare ability makes him both invaluable and expendable. Daniel Roher’s first narrative feature turns sound itself into the engine of a heist story, building tension not from gunfire but from clicks, tumblers and held breath.
Why Watch Tuner?
Tuner works because its premise is genuinely original: a heist movie where the superpower is listening. Leo Woodall carries the film as a young man whose disability becomes his edge, playing Niki with a watchful stillness that makes every safe-cracking scene feel like a held breath. Dustin Hoffman brings warmth and gravity as the old pro who recognizes himself in the kid, and their mentor-and-protégé bond gives the crime story a beating heart. Roher, an Academy Award-winning documentarian, films New York with an eye for texture and detail, and the film’s sound design does the heavy lifting that spectacle usually handles elsewhere. For viewers tired of formula crime movies, Tuner offers something rarer: a thriller built on patience, character and the sound of a lock giving way.
