Overview

Forty years after a war that ended in an uneasy truce, humanity’s robotic creations return with a vengeance. In a single devastating strike, the Cylons annihilate the Twelve Colonies, leaving only a ragtag fleet of civilian ships protected by one aging warship: the Battlestar Galactica. Under Commander William Adama and President Laura Roslin, the last survivors of humankind flee across the stars in search of a mythical refuge — the lost Thirteenth Colony, Earth. But the enemy is no longer just metal and circuits. Some Cylons now look perfectly human, and any passenger, officer, or friend could secretly be one of them. Battlestar Galactica is far more than a space adventure; it is a gritty meditation on war, faith, politics, and what it means to remain human when civilization itself is on the brink of extinction. With serialized storytelling, morally gray characters, and twists that genuinely shock, the reimagined series set a new standard for science fiction on television and remains one of the most acclaimed dramas of its era.

Creator and Main Cast

Battlestar Galactica was created by Glen A. Larson and Ronald D. Moore for Syfy, reimagining Larson’s 1978 series. The cast includes Edward James Olmos as William Adama (73 episodes), Mary McDonnell as Laura Roslin (73 episodes), Jamie Bamber as Lee ‘Apollo’ Adama (73 episodes), Katee Sackhoff as Kara ‘Starbuck’ Thrace (73 episodes), James Callis as Gaius Baltar (73 episodes), Tricia Helfer as Number Six (73 episodes), Tahmoh Penikett as Karl ‘Helo’ Agathon (73 episodes), Grace Park as Sharon ‘Boomer’ Valerii (73 episodes), and Michael Hogan as Saul Tigh (73 episodes).

Seasons Snapshot

Battlestar Galactica ran for 4 seasons and 73 episodes: Season 1 (13 episodes) premiered on October 18, 2004; Season 2 (20 episodes) premiered on July 15, 2005; Season 3 (20 episodes) premiered on October 6, 2006; and Season 4 (20 episodes) premiered on April 4, 2008, concluding with the finale “Daybreak (2)” on March 20, 2009. The series also produced 47 Specials, which are not counted in the episode total.

Why Watch Battlestar Galactica?

Battlestar Galactica rewards viewers who want science fiction with real weight. The space battles are spectacular, but the show’s true engine is its characters: leaders forced into impossible choices, soldiers wrestling with loyalty and identity, and a fleet where democracy itself becomes a matter of survival. Its questions about artificial intelligence, religion, and occupation feel more relevant with every passing year, and its serialized arcs build to a finale that fans still debate today. If you love prestige drama and have never tried serious sci-fi, this is the perfect place to start.
