Overview
Set in 1981, Aema goes behind the scenes of a film industry that wanted women’s bodies on screen and their silence off it. Established movie star Jeong Hee-ran and ambitious newcomer Shin Ju-ae find their lives tangled up in the making of the provocative film Madame Aema, a production surrounded by male gatekeepers, backstage deals and moral double standards. As the two women push against the rules written for them, their rivalry gives way to a sharper understanding: survival in this business means choosing when to play along and when to fight back. Funny, frank and furious in equal measure, Aema is a period drama about fame, exploitation and female solidarity. Lee Hanee leads a lively ensemble, and the show’s retro style never softens its point — the glamour of the movie world was built on compromises that its actresses were expected to make quietly, and these two refuse to stay quiet.
