Overview
Not if. When. That is the chilling premise of Kathryn Bigelow’s A House of Dynamite, a political thriller that imagines the worst day in American history — and then plays it out in agonising real time. When an unidentified missile is detected heading for the United States, the people charged with stopping it — from the White House Situation Room to the soldiers on the ground — have just minutes to decide how to respond. Told from multiple viewpoints across the chain of command, the film ratchets up the tension with every tick of the clock, as protocols collide with panic and every decision carries unthinkable consequences. Idris Elba is commanding as the President, Rebecca Ferguson is superb as a military aide at the heart of the crisis, and Gabriel Basso, Jared Harris and Tracy Letts complete a powerhouse ensemble. Bigelow, the director of The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, brings her trademark intensity to a nightmare scenario that feels terrifyingly plausible.
Why Watch A House of Dynamite?
Because few directors do tension like Kathryn Bigelow, and this is her at her most relentless. The film’s real-time structure means you never get a moment to breathe, and its refusal to offer easy answers makes it linger long after the credits roll. It is a thriller that respects its audience — and a sobering reminder of how thin the line between order and catastrophe really is.
