Overview

Set inside the fictional Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, Chicago Med follows the doctors, nurses, and administrators who keep one of the city’s busiest emergency departments running. Every shift brings a new crisis — a multi-car pileup, a rare diagnosis, a patient with nowhere else to go — and every decision carries a human cost. Created by Dick Wolf and Matt Olmstead as part of the wider One Chicago universe, the series balances high-stakes medicine with the personal lives of its staff: romances form in the corridors, rivalries flare in the operating room, and the pressure of life-or-death calls tests even the most experienced physicians. Across more than a decade on air, Chicago Med has built its drama on a simple promise: the hospital never sleeps, and neither do the people who hold it together.

Creator and Main Cast

Created by Dick Wolf and Matt Olmstead. Main cast members include S. Epatha Merkerson as Sharon Goodwin (225 episodes), Oliver Platt as Dr. Daniel Charles (225 episodes), Marlyne Barrett as Maggie Lockwood (198 episodes), Nick Gehlfuss as Dr. Will Halstead (165 episodes), Brian Tee as Dr. Ethan Choi (131 episodes), Torrey DeVitto as Dr. Natalie Manning (123 episodes), Yaya DaCosta as April Sexton (122 episodes), and Steven Weber as Dr. Dean Archer (111 episodes).

Seasons Snapshot

Chicago Med premiered on NBC on November 17, 2015, and is still a returning series. It has run for 12 seasons, with Season 12 premiering on October 7, 2026. Early seasons introduced the core emergency team and the hospital’s leadership, while later seasons brought new doctors, leadership changes, and crossovers with Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D.

Why Watch Chicago Med?

Because it delivers the best of the medical drama in a single package: urgent, emotional cases each week, a cast that has grown together over a decade, and the added depth of the One Chicago universe, where characters cross between the hospital, the firehouse, and the police district. It is comforting, tense, and reliably gripping television.
