Overview
On a cliff above the sea lives five-year-old Sosuke, who one morning finds a tiny goldfish trapped in a jar on the shore. He names her Ponyo, and the two become inseparable — but Ponyo is no ordinary fish. She is the daughter of the sea goddess Gran Mamare and the sorcerer Fujimoto, and her magic is already stirring the ocean into a storm. When Ponyo escapes to the human world, her power floods Sosuke’s town, turning streets into canals and setting the balance of nature spinning. As the sea rises and the moon draws dangerously close, Sosuke and Ponyo must prove that their friendship is real enough to restore the world. Hayao Miyazaki’s hand-drawn adventure is pure wonder: waves that leap like living creatures, a town full of kind neighbors, and a story about love, responsibility, and the courage of a very small child.

Because it is Studio Ghibli at its most joyful and hand-crafted. Every wave is drawn by hand, the sea feels alive, and the story never talks down to children — it trusts them with big feelings about nature, family, and change. Ponyo and Sosuke’s friendship is utterly charming, and the film’s warmth makes it perfect for viewers of any age.
