Aibou: Tokyo Detective Duo — known in Japan simply as Aibou, or Partners — is one of Japanese television’s great long-running detective dramas. At its center is Ukyo Sugishita, a brilliant but unconventional detective exiled to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Special Task Unit, a tiny office where he works cases according to his own convictions rather than the chain of command. Each season pairs him with a new partner — the hot-tempered Kaoru Kameyama, the cool Takeru Kambe, the young Toru Kai, and later Wataru Kaburagi — and the chemistry between Sugishita’s quiet logic and his partner’s very different style drives the show. Cases range from locked-room murders to political conspiracies, but the series is really about principle: Sugishita’s refusal to bend, even when the institution around him would prefer he did. Since 2002, that stubborn integrity has kept Aibou essential viewing in Japan.
