Overview
Sixteen years after the French 75 disbanded, Bob Ferguson is living off the grid in a haze of paranoia, raising his teenage daughter Willa alone. When the old enemies he thought he had escaped resurface, led by the ruthless Col. Steven J. Lockjaw, and Willa goes missing, Bob is dragged back into a fight he never really left behind. Paul Thomas Anderson turns Thomas Pynchon’s novel Vineland into a wild, propulsive chase across California, where a washed-up revolutionary must outrun the past while protecting the one person who matters most. Leonardo DiCaprio anchors the film as Bob, a man whose idealism has curdled into something tender, funny, and desperate, with Sean Penn as his relentless nemesis and Chase Infiniti as Willa, the spirited daughter who refuses to be a bystander. Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, and Teyana Taylor round out a vivid ensemble. It is a sprawling, funny, and furiously paced film about parents, radicals, and the battles that never really end.
Why Watch One Battle After Another?
Because it is Paul Thomas Anderson at his most propulsive: a decade-spanning chase movie with the heart of a family drama. The DiCaprio and Penn face-off is worth the price of admission alone, and the film’s mix of screwball humor, genuine menace, and radical history gives it a charge few blockbusters can match. If you like your thrillers big, funny, and a little unhinged, this one delivers.
