Overview

Ratatouille follows Remy, a rat with an unusually refined palate who dreams of cooking in Paris instead of scavenging with his colony. Separated from his family in a storm drain, he washes up beneath Gusteau’s, the restaurant of his late idol, where a talentless garbage boy named Linguini is about to be fired. Remy saves the soup, and the two strike an unlikely bargain: Remy hides under Linguini’s chef’s hat and steers him by tugging his hair, turning the bumbling newcomer into the kitchen’s rising star. As the restaurant flourishes, head chef Skinner grows suspicious, food critic Anton Ego looms with a review that could make or break Gusteau’s, and Remy’s family arrives with a very different appetite. Brad Bird’s film is a love letter to Paris, to cooking, and to the idea that greatness can come from the most unlikely places.

Why Watch Ratatouille?

Ratatouille won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, and it remains one of Pixar’s most beloved films because it takes its hero’s impossible dream completely seriously. The Paris kitchens look good enough to eat, Michael Giacchino’s score swings between waltz and whimsy, and the climax, in which the fearsome critic Anton Ego tastes a humble plate of ratatouille and is transported back to his childhood, is one of the most moving scenes in animation. Gusteau’s motto, “Anyone can cook,” is the film’s beating heart: a reminder that talent and passion matter more than pedigree.
