Overview
Every fairytale has a dark version, and Pinocchio: Unstrung leans all the way into it. Geppetto’s wooden boy was supposed to learn how to be real through kindness and courage. Instead, egged on by a sinister Cricket whispering in his ear, this Pinocchio embarks on a violent crusade to carve himself into a real boy — whatever it takes, and whoever stands in his way. His target is a life like that of his human brother James, and his methods are anything but childish. Director Rhys Frake-Waterfield, the mind behind the twisted-fairytale horror wave, stages the carnage with gleeful excess, while Richard Brake’s Geppetto and Robert Englund’s voice work as the Cricket give the nightmare its pedigree. At just 82 minutes, Unstrung is a short, sharp shock of a horror film.

Why Watch Pinocchio: Unstrung?
Watch Pinocchio: Unstrung if you enjoy horror that takes a story you loved as a child and turns it gloriously, gruesomely upside down. The film’s hook — a puppet desperate to become real by any bloody means — is twisted in the best way, and the casting is a horror fan’s dream: Richard Brake brings menace to Geppetto, while Robert Englund voicing the Cricket is the kind of inspired choice that sells the whole premise. It is short, outrageous and knowingly over the top, perfect for a late-night watch with friends who appreciate their fairytales with a body count.
