Erased

2016 • TMDB 8.5 • 1 season • Animation, Drama, Mystery

Overview

Satoru Fujinuma is a struggling manga artist with a strange gift: moments before a tragedy strikes, time rewinds a few minutes, giving him a chance to prevent it. When his mother is murdered and he is framed for the crime, the rewind goes much further than ever before, hurling him back to 1988 and into his ten-year-old body. There, in his old elementary school, Satoru realizes the murder is connected to a string of child abductions he witnessed as a boy, and that his classmate Kayo Hinazuki is in terrible danger. With only his adult memories and a child’s power, he sets out to change the past, protect his friends, and unmask the killer hiding in plain sight. Erased is a taut, emotional thriller that treats its time-travel premise seriously, building suspense from small choices and quiet moments as much as from danger. At just twelve episodes, it is a perfectly paced mystery that keeps its heart firmly in the friendships Satoru is fighting to save.

Why Watch Erased?

Erased is one of the most tightly constructed anime thrillers ever made. Its time-travel setup is used not for spectacle but for suspense: every small change Satoru makes ripples forward in ways he cannot fully predict, and the identity of the killer stays genuinely uncertain until late in the run. The childhood setting gives the story real warmth, too, as Satoru rediscovers the courage and friendships he lost as an adult. If you want a mystery you can finish in a weekend and think about for much longer, Erased is the one.
