Overview
After their father dies suddenly, siblings Andy and Piper are placed with a foster mother, Laura, in a quiet house that soon feels anything but safe. Laura is grieving a daughter of her own, and her grief has curdled into something obsessive: a ritual, whispered in private, that promises to bring the dead back. As strange rules pile up and the withdrawn boy Oliver becomes the focus of Laura’s attention, Andy begins to realize that his new home is not a refuge at all, but the setting for a ceremony that demands a terrible price. From the Philippou brothers, the filmmakers behind Talk to Me, this is a horror film built on loss: the fear is not only what Laura might do, but what grief can make a person willing to do.
Why Watch Bring Her Back?
Because it is the rare horror film that is as emotionally devastating as it is frightening. Sally Hawkins is extraordinary as Laura, a woman whose warmth and menace are never far apart, and the young cast — Billy Barratt, Sora Wong, and Jonah Wren Phillips — carries the film’s grief with heartbreaking honesty. The Philippous stage their scares with dread rather than jump cuts, and the final act earns its shocks because you care about the people in danger. If Talk to Me proved the brothers could scare you, Bring Her Back proves they can break your heart while doing it.
