Overview
Fjord follows Mihai and Lisbet Gheorghiu, a Romanian-Norwegian couple who move with their children to a remote Norwegian village hoping for a calmer, safer life. At first the fjord landscape and welcoming neighbours seem to promise exactly that: a fresh start, a school for the children, and a community that cares. Then a bruise on their young daughter sets off questions at school, and the family’s private life is suddenly examined by teachers, social workers, and neighbours who mean well but see the world very differently. As trust frays, the couple must defend not only their parenting but their faith, culture, and understanding of family itself. Cristian Mungiu directs with patient, unflinching realism, letting long scenes and quiet confrontations carry the moral weight. Fjord is a tense, deeply human drama about belonging, judgment, and the painful gap between protection and control.
Why Watch Fjord?
Watch Fjord for a drama that refuses easy villains: every character acts from conviction, yet those convictions collide in ways that are heartbreaking to watch. Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve give restrained, lived-in performances, and Mungiu’s calm, observational style makes the tension feel uncomfortably real. It is the kind of film that stays with you long after the credits, because it asks difficult questions without pretending to have simple answers.
