Overview
Roofman tells a true story so strange it sounds made up, and that is exactly why it works. Jeffrey Manchester, a former Army Ranger and struggling father, robs fast-food restaurants by cutting through their roofs, lands in prison, and then escapes — only to spend months hiding inside a toy store, living off the shelves and watching the world go by. When he starts a new life under a false name and falls for Leigh, a divorced mother played by Kirsten Dunst, his secret becomes harder and harder to keep. Director Derek Cianfrance balances the absurd comedy of the premise with real tenderness, never turning Jeffrey into a cartoon. The result is a warm, funny, and surprisingly moving crime drama about a man who keeps running from his mistakes, and the people who give him a reason to stop.
Why Watch Roofman?
Roofman is worth watching because Channing Tatum gives one of his most likable and layered performances as Jeffrey, funny and reckless one moment, quietly heartbroken the next, while Kirsten Dunst grounds the film with warmth and skepticism in equal measure. The toy-store hideout sequences are a delight, the supporting cast — including Ben Mendelsohn, Peter Dinklage, and LaKeith Stanfield — is superb, and Cianfrance keeps the focus on character rather than just the caper. It is the rare based-on-a-true-story film that feels both stranger than fiction and deeply human.
