Overview

De Slimste Mens ter Wereld (The Smartest Person in the World) is Flanders’ beloved quiz show, airing on VRT 1 since 2003. Each season, a panel of well-known Flemish personalities battles through rounds of general knowledge, wordplay, and quick thinking, with one contestant eliminated each day until the smartest person of the season is crowned. Hosted for years by Erik Van Looy, the show mixes serious quizzing with humor, as jury members and contestants trade jokes between questions. Its questions range from Olympic medals to comic-book characters, rewarding broad curiosity over narrow expertise. A fixture of Flemish autumn television, it regularly draws huge audiences and sparks national debates about who really is the smartest person in Flanders.
