Overview
Guts is a wandering mercenary with a sword bigger than himself and a past he cannot outrun. When he is defeated in a duel by Griffith, the charismatic leader of the Band of the Hawk, he is drawn into a band of warriors who seem unbeatable — and into a friendship that will define, and destroy, them both. Berserk (1997) adapts Kentaro Miura’s dark fantasy manga with a grim, medieval world of war, ambition and betrayal, where loyalty is tested on the battlefield and something far more menacing waits in the shadows. Across 25 episodes, the series builds from mercenary adventure to one of the most devastating climaxes in anime — the Eclipse — a finale that still haunts viewers decades later. Brutal, tragic and beautifully scored, the 1997 Berserk is not an easy watch, but it is an essential one: the definitive telling of the Golden Age arc, and a story about dreams, friendship and the price of both.
