Overview
Samurai Champloo follows Fuu, a young waitress working in a small tea house, who rescues two swordsmen from execution and hires them for a journey: find the samurai who smells of sunflowers. Her unlikely bodyguards could hardly be more different. Mugen is a wild, breakdancing brawler who fights with a chaotic, improvised style, while Jin is a cold, disciplined ronin whose swordsmanship is precise and classical. Their constant rivalry is the engine of the show, but the road keeps throwing them together — through gambling dens, baseball games, graffiti artists, con artists and assassins in an Edo-period Japan remixed with hip-hop beats, turntables and street culture. Directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, the series is less interested in its destination than in the detours, and each episodic adventure mixes comedy, action and sudden melancholy. Underneath the anachronistic style is a story about three lonely people who slowly become a family, set to a legendary soundtrack led by Nujabes. By the time the sunflower samurai is finally found, the journey itself has become the point.
