Overview
Charles Dickens has a story he cannot wait to tell. When his young son Walter, more interested in King Arthur and sword fights than in Sunday lessons, begs for a tale, Dickens opens his imagination and the greatest story ever told comes alive. What begins as a bedtime story turns into a journey through first-century Judea, where Walter walks beside Jesus of Nazareth, watches water turn to wine and the sick made whole, and follows him through betrayal, trial, and crucifixion to resurrection. Framed by the warmth of the Dickens household in Victorian London, the film lets a child’s wonder carry the audience through miracles and heartbreak alike. Director Jang Seong-ho balances spectacle with tenderness, giving the familiar Gospel narrative the sweep of an animated epic while keeping its focus on a father’s love and a son’s awakening faith. With a voice cast led by Oscar Isaac, Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, and Pierce Brosnan, The King of Kings is a rare family film that treats its subject with reverence and its young viewers with respect.
Why Watch The King of Kings?
Because it finds a fresh way into the oldest story in the world. Instead of a dry retelling, the film filters the life of Jesus through a child’s imagination, so miracles feel astonishing rather than routine and sacrifice lands with real weight. The animation is rich and painterly, the voice cast is superb — Isaac brings quiet authority to Jesus and Branagh warmth to Dickens — and the Dickens framing device gives parents and children something to talk about after the credits. It is also a genuine box-office phenomenon for faith-based animation, proof that family audiences still turn out for stories told with sincerity.
