Overview
Orphaned and kicked out of his orphanage, Atsushi Nakajima is starving on the riverbank when he saves a drowning man — who turns out to be Osamu Dazai, the eccentric heart of the Armed Detective Agency. Atsushi soon learns the beastly white tiger stalking him is actually his own supernatural ability, and the Agency, a team of detectives whose powers are named after famous authors, takes him in. From there, Bungo Stray Dogs becomes a stylish urban-fantasy battle of wits: the Agency faces the Port Mafia, the American Guild and the shadowy Decay of Angels, while Dazai’s past with his former partner Chuuya keeps pulling the story back into darker territory. The hook is the literary gimmick — Dazai’s “No Longer Human” nullifies other abilities, Akutagawa’s “Rashomon” turns his coat into a weapon — but the heart is Atsushi learning he is worth more than the price on his head. Witty, violent and surprisingly moving, it is a detective series where every fight is also an argument about what a life is worth.
